2017 MURPH Challenge Wrap-Up

Adrenaline’s third annual MURPH Challenge fundraiser was an outstanding success! I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated and donated to Freedom Alliance! This year we had over 100 people that completed the MURPH and it included folks from Adrenaline, CrossFit Hydraulic, the nZone, and Freedom Alliance. We were happy to have them join us and wish to say thank you!

All of the generous donations and t-shirt sales added up to an amazing $4,950 this year!! This exceeds our net donation amount from 2016 and 100% of those donations went to Freedom Alliance so that they can continue their important mission of helping veterans and their families.

Thank you to Tom Kilgannon for all of his support and for providing a special guest, Jake Rangel, to come in and share his moving story with us during several of our MURPH waves. His story certainly hit home, as well as helped to remind us all of the meaning of Memorial Day and inspired us to power through the tough workout.

Adrenaline, we are truly a wonderful community that continues to come together to support amazing causes!

Thank you again Adrenaline and thank you to the instructors who helped make the event a success! We are looking forward to next year!

2017 MURPH Challenge Inspiration

Adrenaline!! This is it!! The MURPH Challenge workout is almost here! Get excited! It’s going to be an amazing experience. To help inspire you, check out the story below. It was provided by our very own Tom Kilgannon, and highlights some of the great things Freedom Alliance is doing for our veterans.

Veteran Joe Haney is a wounded service member and Freedom Alliance gave him a mortgage-free home earlier this year. He will do the MURPH this year from his home in Las Vegas. Before his injuries slowed him down, Joe was a world-class athlete. In 2014, he and his partner finished 7th out of 26 teams in the Army’s Best Ranger Competition which is an incredible accomplishment. Click here for more info on the story about Joe and some of the components of the competition.

For the third year at Adrenaline Bootcamp, we are hosting the Memorial Day MURPH Challenge and teaming up with Freedom Alliance to help honor America’s heroes and give back to those who sacrificed for our freedom. All proceeds raised go directly to Freedom Alliance.

To find out more about Freedom Alliance please go to their Website or find them on Facebook. Freedom Alliance is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a public charity organized under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.

Set Goals, Crush Goals – Adrenaline Goes Savage!

The nZone’s own Adrenaline Fitness Bootcamp is on a mission this year to challenge its members to push themselves outside of their normal comfort zone and complete an Obstacle Course Race (OCR). Set Goals, Crush Goals was the mantra set at the beginning of this year for Adrenaline Bootcamp and the members clearly answered the call.

For the first event of the year, Team Adrenaline showed up in force at the Savage Race in Maryland with 115 members, friends, and family to participate in the race. Clad in the signature 2017 Adrenaline Bootcamp OCR Series green t-shirts, Team Adrenaline was by far the largest group to participate in the Savage Race. They represented Adrenaline and the nZone in the best manner possible…and everywhere you looked, you could not miss seeing someone in a green shirt! Everyone commented how amazing it was to see such a large group of people come together to do something way outside their comfort zone, and to see the months of hard work and dedication finally being put into action was absolutely incredible!

In addition to the focus on fitness, Adrenaline Bootcamp members are a special group of people who know no bounds when it comes to fellowship and teamwork. They rise to the occasion, they always give 110%, and more importantly, they encourage one another. Out on the race course, they completed the 6+ miles and all obstacles knowing that they were in this together and that help was never far away if it was needed. Team Adrenaline not only helped each other, but everyone else in the race to get through the obstacles and surpass their personal goals.

There are still several Obstacle Course Races on the agenda for Team Adrenaline this year. No matter if you are a veteran at these events or a new first timer looking to step outside of your comfort zone, consider joining us! Contact Jon “the OCR guy” Mollerup at AdrenalineOCR@ThenZone.com for more information about the Adrenaline 2017 Obstacle Course Race Series.

Foam Rolling

What Is It And What Does It Do?

Exercise induces micro-tears and swelling in muscle fibers, which impinge on nerves and vessels. Over time, this can develop into adhesions and scar tissue. Foam rolling helps smooth out these obstructions and break down adhesions, helping to increase blood-flow within the muscle.

Another benefit is that it helps your muscles relax by activating the sensory receptors connecting your muscle fibers to your tendons. The net effect is better blood circulation, which in turn speeds workout recovery and boosts performance. If you hit a sore spot while foam rolling, hold the roller there for 30-60 seconds—you found a tight area that needs special attention.

Foam rolling can be performed both before and after a workout. Current national academy of sports medicine guidance recommends foam rolling before a workout as best practice. Concentrating on sensitive spots will help relax your muscles. This is the first step in a proper warm up, followed by stretching any tight muscles, and then performing dynamic warm-up exercises.

Foam rolling after a workout helps your muscles return to the proper length and recover even faster because it can prevent the buildup of scar tissue.

There are foam rollers available for use in the fitness center. Give it a try sometime either before or after a class..

Happy New Year Adrenaline!!

2016 was an eventful year in many ways! The program continued to grow at a steady pace. During the last year we increased our membership numbers, we added new instructors, launched a second Saturday timeslot and new lunchtime class offering, grew our online presence by adding a Yelp page, increased our number of Instagram followers fivefold, topped over 500 Facebook followers, and started a new blog. Our class participation numbers have also increased. At this time last year most classes averaged attendance in the teens or low twenties, we now have several classes that are averaging attendance in the upper twenties and low thirties, and our Saturday classes regularly approach 40+. As the class size grew, so did the level of excitement. I was so happy to see how our members pulled together in a larger group environment and how encouraging everyone was in helping each other achieve their fitness goals!

And not everything that was accomplished during the last year was done in class. We also came together to give back and contribute a great deal to our community. I am so proud of our members and their generosity. It truly blew me away when I went back to look at some of the numbers. During 2016, Adrenaline raised over $9,300 between our Memorial Day Murph fundraiser benefiting Freedom Alliance and the Dulles Plane Pull benefiting Special Olympics Virginia! We also added two new charity events this year and collected 415 items for our first ever Thanksgiving food drive and 108 toys for our Holiday toy drive. That is a respectable impact and I am truly grateful for everyone who helped make the charity drives such a huge success.

Looking forward to 2017, I am so excited for what lies ahead!

First off, our newest instructor, Ben, will start covering classes later this month. We are really looking forward to what he will bring to the program.

And for those of you looking for a challenge outside of class, we have a full line up of obstacle course races to look forward to this year. Thanks to the leadership of Jon and Ed, we have a well-organized team and some great information being shared about the races. Our first event will be the Savage Race in Maryland, and the Adrenaline team is currently upwards of 70 people! That’s truly incredible and it is going to be a fun and exciting experience for everyone signed up. Adrenaline is going to rock it!!

We will also continue to give back to the community by participating in some fitness-focused charity events such as our annual Murph as well as a new event or two.

On behalf of all the instructors at Adrenaline, we wish you and your families a strong and healthy 2017! Let’s make this year the best one yet! Cheers!!

Best Regards,

Heather Croxton
Director of Adrenaline Bootcamp
